Black Don't Crack: Skincare Basics

By Kimberly Seals

Beauty has no age limit, but our skin needs different things to look and feel its best as we age. In the “Black Don’t Crack” series we’ll be exploring the best beauty, skincare, and self-care routines for different age ranges. But first, the basics. Regardless of your age, these 5 self-care fundamentals will lay the foundations for healthy and happy skin for years to come.

1. Have a Routine

The most important part of any skincare or self-care routine is consistency. Finding products and processes that work well for you is a close second, but even the best beauty regime is only as useful as how often you do it.

When you’re crafting your routine make sure it’s realistic and compatible with your lifestyle. If a 10 step routine is a bit intimidating, start off with something more manageable. The following skincare essentials are a great place to start.

2. Keep it Clean

Keeping your skin clean should be the first step of any routine. Be sure to find the cleanser that works best for your skin type. From foaming to oil there are plenty of varieties to choose from. Be sure to pick one that is gentle enough to be used twice daily without drying your skin. If dry skin is something you struggle with, an oil based cleanser may be best.

3. Ashy is Never Cute

We all know that ashy isn’t cute, but it’s also bad for your skin. A daytime and nighttime face moisturizer are essential for keeping your skin hydrated and protected. And Elle Vie shea body butter will keep the rest of your skin ash free.

4. Use (UV) Protection

Everyone should have a good SPF as a part of their skincare routine. Yes, even you. This is one of the best preventative measures to keep your skin at its best as you age. If preventing wrinkles isn’t reason enough, SPF also prevents skin cancer.

Your daytime facial moisturizer can be an excellent way to make sure you’re protected without adding an extra step to your routine.

5.Exfoliate

At any given time there are likely dozens of layers of dry skin on your face and body! That’s why exfoliating is such an important step for your skincare. Without this step, anything you put on your skin will have a hard time penetrating the layers of dead skin and just sit on top without actually working.

An Elle Vie sugar scrub is an excellent gentle and all natural choice to prep your skin and make sure you’re getting the most out of your skincare routine.
